Propel and Tacoma Relay for Life

Propel and tacoma relay fo rlife

Did you know that Relay for Life began in Tacoma, WA in May of 1985?  Tacoma’s own Gordy Klatt, M.D. walked and ran for 24 hours to raise $27,000 for the American Cancer Society to help fight our Nation’s largest health concern.

Since those first steps, Relay for Life has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising billions of dollars each year for cancer research, treatment and prevention.

The world’s largest fundraising event to fight cancer, Relay for Life volunteers’ fundraising efforts help save more than 500 lives a day.  This year’s event was held on Saturday June 11 and 12 at Mt. Tahoma High School. A proud participant since 2008, Propel is a proud sponsor of Relay and was one of 133 teams that helped raise nearly $400,000 for cancer research this year!

This amazing 24-hour fundraising walk is attended by thousands who relay on teams for the event duration. This year’s theme was Game Over. Throughout day and night, there are many fun activities & entertainment that take place including food, games, themed laps, dance parties, contests and much more. Event details vary by location, but all Relay events have key elements in common including:

  • Survivors Lap– all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while teams & participants line the track and cheer them on.
  • Luminaria Ceremony– Once it gets dark, candles are lit inside personalized bags and are placed around the track to remember loved ones we have lost to cancer, to honor people who have fought cancer in the past and to support those who are still continuing to fight.
  • Fight Back Ceremony– The next morning, this ceremony inspires Relay participants to take action in the fight against cancer by signing up for next year’s event.
